The Front-Page Spotlight
The IRS asks about digital assets directly on Form 1040.
You cannot simply skip the question. Knowingly providing a false answer can lead to serious penalties and possible criminal consequences.
Even if you received no tax form from an exchange, you are still responsible for reporting taxable crypto activity.
The Golden Rule: Crypto Is Property
The IRS generally treats cryptocurrency as property, similar to stocks.
Simply owning crypto does not create a tax bill. Taxes usually apply when you sell, trade, spend, or otherwise dispose of it.
These transactions are called taxable events.
To calculate the result, you need to know:
- What you originally paid
- When you acquired the crypto
- What it was worth when you disposed of it
- Any related transaction fees
The difference becomes a capital gain or loss.
Tax-Free Crypto Moves
Some common crypto activities generally do not trigger a tax bill.
These include:
- Buying crypto with U.S. dollars and holding it
- Moving crypto between wallets you own
- Moving crypto from an exchange to your personal wallet
- Holding crypto while its value rises or falls
Keep records of these transfers. Otherwise, tax software may mistakenly treat them as sales.
The Crypto Tax Triggers
The following transactions generally must be reported:
- Selling crypto for cash
- Trading Bitcoin for Ethereum or another coin
- Using crypto to purchase goods
- Paying for services with crypto
- Receiving crypto as payment for work
- Earning certain staking, mining, or reward income
Trading one coin for another is taxable even when no dollars enter your bank account.
Each transaction must be calculated using its exact date, value, and cost basis. Depending on how long you held the asset, the result may be treated as a short-term or long-term capital gain or loss.
Accurate exchange records, wallet histories, and transaction fees are essential.
