First Time Filing Business Taxes? Here’s What to Expect

The Rookie Jitters

Your first business tax season can feel intimidating.

Suddenly, the IRS seems more complicated than it ever did when you only had a W-2. The good news is that once you understand a few basic rules, the process becomes much more manageable.

Your Entity Dictates Everything

The first question is simple: how is your business taxed?

A sole proprietor or standard single-member LLC usually reports business income and expenses on Schedule C, which attaches directly to your personal Form 1040.

S-Corps, C-Corps, and Partnerships work differently. They generally require their own separate business tax returns before the owners complete their personal filings.

Knowing your entity type tells you which forms you need and when they are due.

Beware the Shifting Deadlines

April 15 is no longer the only deadline that matters.

Calendar-year Partnerships and S-Corps generally file in mid-March, about a month before most individual returns are due. That earlier deadline gives owners time to receive the tax documents they need for their personal returns.

Missing it can trigger penalties quickly.

Do not assume your business return follows the same calendar as your personal return.

The Power of Clean Books

Your tax return is only as accurate as your bookkeeping.

Before opening tax software or calling your accountant, make sure your bank and credit card accounts are reconciled. Your books should show clean income, expenses, loans, owner payments, and payroll activity.

You should also be able to produce an accurate Profit and Loss statement.

If that report looks wrong, fix the books before filing. Clean records help prevent missed deductions, incorrect income, and expensive amendments later.
