What to Do If You Receive a Corrected 1099

The Unwelcome Envelope

Few things are more frustrating than receiving a 1099 with the CORRECTED box checked.

You thought your tax paperwork was done. Then a new form shows up with different numbers.

Do not panic.

Corrected 1099s happen all the time. You just need to follow a quick triage process so one paperwork change does not turn into an IRS problem.

Scenario A: You Have Not Filed Yet

This is the best-case scenario.

If your tax return has not been submitted to the IRS, take a breath. You can still fix the numbers before filing.

Here is what to do:

  • Update your bookkeeping software with the corrected amount
  • Give the corrected 1099 to your accountant
  • Mark the old version as replaced
  • Shred or archive the original so it does not cause confusion later

Do not use both forms.

Only the corrected 1099 should drive the final number on your tax return.

Scenario B: You Already Filed Your Return

If you already filed, the next step depends on whether the corrected form changes your income, deductions, or tax owed.

If the corrected 1099 changes the numbers on your return, you usually cannot ignore it.

You may need to file Form 1040-X, also called an Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

This officially updates your return with the IRS.

The amended return should show what changed, why it changed, and whether you owe more tax or should receive a refund.

The Cross-Reference Warning

Ignoring a corrected 1099 is risky.

The company that sent the corrected form to you also sends a copy to the IRS.

IRS computers compare the forms they receive against the income reported on your tax return. If the numbers do not match, the system may flag the issue.

That can lead to:

  • An IRS notice
  • Extra tax
  • Interest
  • Penalties
  • Delayed refunds
  • More paperwork later

A corrected 1099 is usually easier to fix now than after the IRS sends a mismatch letter.
