The Paycheck Nightmare
Few things feel worse than opening your paycheck and realizing a huge chunk of your income is gone.
That is what can happen when unpaid tax debt gets ignored. The IRS can bypass you and send a legal garnishment order directly to your employer.
Once that happens, your payroll department may be required to send part of your wages to the IRS before you ever see the money.
The Continuous Levy Trap
IRS wage garnishment is different from a bank levy.
A bank levy usually hits the money sitting in your account at one specific moment.
A wage levy is more dangerous because it can be continuous.
When the IRS sends Form 668-W to your employer, the garnishment can keep pulling money from every paycheck until:
- the tax debt is paid,
- the IRS releases the levy,
- you set up an approved resolution,
- or the collection period expires.
That means one ignored notice can turn into months of damaged cash flow.
The Exemption Fallacy
Many people assume the IRS only takes a fair percentage, like 15% or 25%.
That is not how it works.
The IRS uses exemption rules from Publication 1494 to decide how much of your paycheck you are allowed to keep for basic living expenses.
Everything above that exempt amount may be sent to the IRS.
In plain English, the IRS does not ask what feels comfortable.
They calculate a minimum protected amount and can seize the rest.
That can make it hard to pay rent, utilities, groceries, and business obligations.
How to Stop the Interceptor
You still have options, but speed matters.
Here are three common ways to stop or prevent IRS wage garnishment:
- Request a Collection Due Process hearing.
If you received Letter LT11 or a final notice of intent to levy, you may have 30 days to request a CDP hearing. - Negotiate an Installment Agreement.
A formal IRS payment plan may stop levy action once approved. - Prove financial hardship.
If garnishment prevents you from paying basic living expenses, you may qualify for Currently Not Collectible status.
Do not wait for payroll to call you.
Once the levy reaches your employer, the problem becomes more urgent and more embarrassing.
