Hiring Your Kids in Your Business: Tax Benefits and Rules to Follow

The Family Wealth Loophole

Why pay your kids an allowance with after-tax money when your business may be able to hire them instead?

When done correctly, wages paid to your children can become a legitimate business deduction. That means your business may reduce taxable profit while your child earns money, learns responsibility, and starts building wealth early.

But this only works if the job is real.

Benefit 1: The FICA Tax Shield

Here is the big tax break.

If your business is a sole proprietorship or a single-member LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship, wages paid to your child under age 18 may be exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes.

That means no FICA tax on those wages.

This can be a powerful family tax strategy.

Important note: this benefit usually does not work the same way for S-Corps or C-Corps. If your corporation pays your child, payroll taxes generally still apply.

Benefit 2: The 0% Tax Bracket and Roth IRA

Your child may also owe little or no federal income tax.

Why?

Because a child with earned income can use their own standard deduction. If their wages stay within that limit, they may pay $0 in federal income tax.

Even better, earned income can allow your child to fund a Roth IRA.

That is where the long-term wealth-building begins.

Money in a Roth IRA can grow for decades. Qualified withdrawals in retirement may be tax-free.

So instead of handing your child spending money, you may be helping them start a lifetime wealth account.

The IRS Rules: How to Stay Audit-Proof

The IRS does not allow fake jobs.

You need to treat your child like a real employee.

Follow these rules:

  • Real work: The job must be legitimate and age-appropriate.
  • Reasonable pay: Pay a fair rate for the task. Do not pay $100 per hour to sweep the floor.
  • Proper paperwork: Track hours, run payroll, and issue a Form W-2 at year-end.

Good child-friendly jobs may include:

  • Cleaning the office
  • Filing paperwork
  • Shredding documents
  • Packing orders
  • Organizing supplies
  • Modeling for marketing photos
  • Helping with social media
  • Basic data entry

Keep records.

Save timesheets, job descriptions, payroll reports, and proof of payment.
